This is the start of my book. Its set in the future.
Section 1: City-Limits
All was well when the last rays of day fell off behind the wall surrounding the city limits. The light passing through the window I was sitting at dimmed and disappeared, the streets were partially lit by the aging street lights that flickered on, and the people in their apartments drew their curtains, or shut off the lights so nothing was recognizable beyond the glass of the windows. The speakers, set up across the entire city, popped to life, an unknown women’s voice spoke, notifying an early curfew was to be put into affect in 5 minutes. The reassuring, calm female voice was still echoing through the widely empty streets when I looked at my clock on my desk. Other than the date, temperature, which was a surprising sixty three degrees, and what phase of the non-visible moon was in, was the time. Notably earlier than usual, the curfew was to be at eight instead of the regular nine sharp. This was probably in response to the recent homicides of several people, rumors have been popping up that they were visitors from the inner ring, not very believable because no has seen anyone from the inner ring. But this wasn’t horrible, the curfew didn’t affect most of our lives because the bars and clubs were all shut down, and it gave us all a sense of safety, knowing the city guard was around. Something that we all needed, a feeling of safety, after all our new government was still getting its kinks worn out.
As a mailman I needed to know what kind of people gave me my flesh and blood, so I checked out the records at our newly built city hall. According to the plaque in the front office, this new government was of a new type, or what I’m suspecting one that hasn’t been around for about a few centuries, maybe not even before the Great War. This government was a one controlled by a council of chosen leaders of the central ring and the inner ring sending out the final say. Of course the people of the city limits had some say, but as for being in the main voting group, this only came with being part of the inner rings. The news papers and reporters called it a representative senate; they claimed it to bring happiness to everyone no matter status. Our old system of government, which was called something along the lines of republic democracy, was deemed to bias and was voted by the people to be switched. The new government’s Declaration of Laws allowed the council to decide what was best for all people. So far nothing bad has happened, at least I haven’t seen or heard anything, but the total control those outside sources gives me a strong feeling of bad things to come.
